We came here to have dinner with a couple local friends. Dinner was up in the air and we all agreed sushi sounded like a great change. We eat in regularly back home and hadn't had any in a week, we were thrilled. Four of us were offered a boring table, then we opted to sit at the empty sushi bar. The inside of the restaurant is sexy. I liked the jellyfish looking lights looming above. The other couple got a bunch of rolls and my husband and I split a red and white roll which was a combo of spicy tuna wrapped with red and white tuna on top. I thought the roll was great. The classic rainbow which was also. Then some a la carte pieces. Everything was as fresh as we get in Boston. Also, the night we went, Thursday, is ladies night! Us ladies got a third off rolls and dinner. Then took advantage of the $5 cosmo too. Not bad! The sushi chefs in front of us were so nice. They saw we were eating and drinking a lot and gave us a complimentary tempura banana dessert. If you need a break from the low country fare, try Bambu.

I love this place. I eat here all the time. The Valentine role is my favorite. Good service and good people.

Just ate here tonight for the first time.... WOW!!! We went for restaurant week and the food was terrific. Great wine paired with our meal. We had the edamame, sashimi and clams for appetizers. Everything was great. For our meals, we shared both the scallops and the Thai chicken - very, very good (I liked the chicken better than the scallops). Dessert was Asian donuts and these were the shining moment of the meal. The service was on point and very attentive. Being restaurant week (hence all the food) the price was great. We did eat in the bar area and it was a little loud but there are plenty of other spaces to eat including a very spacious outside area. We cannot wait to go back...

Let's start with the highlights of the night - the teen host, Derrick, removed a rogue cigarette butt from the plant by our table after some trashy lady put it out in the poor plant. The potato roll with the shoestring potatoes was the highlight of the meal. We were also a party of seven and they split our check without any complaint. Food - the pad thai tasted like they bought a bottle of crappy pad thai sauce and dumped it on some noodles. It did have a great quantity of shrimp though. The Sun Fire roll lacked flavor and did not taste fresh. The calamari was good, but the teriyaki basil edamame was REALLY spicy. Fantastic if you love spice, but they didn't mention spice on the description. The thai curry was also a hit with the people who got that. Our waitress was slow and new and provided no insight to either drinks or food. We even asked about the lamps on the table to see if they were heat lamps and she didn't even know if they worked or what they did. Probably not a good idea to stick a brand new waitress with a large party on a Saturday night. To top off our night, one of the wine bottles had crystals coating the bottom that we didn't see till we poured the last glass. Without complaint though, they comped the wine. Also be warned, if you sit outside, wear bug spray. The gnats attack. Bathrooms are also nice and the atmosphere is inviting.

Solid sushi for a place like Charleston, where the sushi selection is not top notch. Good prices here especially during Happy hour (4-7). I do like them better than anywhere downtown (where I live) so I drive out there. Only reason for not 4 stars is that I have had elite level sushi. The prices are deals are 5 star though.

People apparently go here to drink, not to eat. Horrible experience. It was so loud we could barely hear. The waitress, although nice, spilled something every time she brought us a drink (or soup, which tasted horrible) and was having to go outside and around to serve us because of the bar crowd. We cancelled our order and then promptly left. There was no way I was eating raw fish at this place.

Food was really good! Clean restaurant, fun, live music, nice set up. Definitely recommend the delicious sushi, sashimi, and everything!!!

I've heard all kinds of hype about Bambu in the month that it's been open. Everyone has given positive reviews and I was not disappointed. The decor is nice and the outdoor seating looks like it will be great when it's a little warmer. The prices are reasonable and the sushi portions are generous. Their rolls have a hefty portion of fish and are really balanced and tasty. The service was good too (though they are still working out some kinks getting the menu, the servers, and the computers all speaking the same language). Does every sushi bar automatically come with a sushi cam now? We'll be back here many times, I just wish it was closer so we could do take out more often. Bambu and Sushi Haru are the two best sushi options in Mount Pleasant; I'd call Bambu the winner--its rolls tasted better put together, meatier, and I think a dollar or two cheaper. Plus, Sushi Haru feels right at home in the strip mall and Bambu has an atmosphere more like what you find at Red Drum. (If you're searching for Bamboo restaurant in Mount Pleasant, this is the one you're looking for. Search engines have yet to figure out the hip new ways of spelling Bamboo.)

Delicious sushi in a fun, lovely atmosphere. You'd never guess it is in a strip mall once you enter the patio. We're STILL talking about the Charleston roll that we had. The Lobster BLT was amazingly good, too. The service was attentive, friendly and quick. I'll be back in a heart beat!

Went to Bambu last weekend to try something new. Especially excited that Bambu is in Mt. Pleasant but has the feel of a downtown restaurant. Overall my boyfriend and I were very pleased with Bambu. The decor is really nice and wait staff seemed friendly and knowledgeable. We started with the lobster wontons which was great. My boyfriend got a cucumber tuna roll which was good as well. For entrees, I had the Basil Beef and he had the Pad Thai. Both were good but not mind blowing. The best thing about Bambu,in my opinion, is the outdoor bar/seating area. It was too cool the night we were there to sit on the patio but I can definitely see how that will be busy during the summer months. Overall - really happy with Bambu and will go again!

This is one of our favorite places to eat. My husband and I are regulars. We love sushi and sashimi. The sashimi delux is awesome! We are always treated like royalty, and the bar service is excellent. I enjoy a really cold dry grey goose martini, and they haven't done me wrong yet. My husband is about on drinker, and they have a good selection. We enjoy all of their appetizers (small plates) and have not had a bad entre (large plate). The food is reasonably priced. The variety and quality is also consistent and very rewarding. We definitely recommend Bambu to all our friends!

I come to Bambu, once a week if I'm able! I absolutely love it, amazing waitstaff, and delicious sushi! I always wash it down with their pomegranite royale, champagne topped with homemade pomegranite syrup!

I've never had worse service in my life. I waited 10 minutes at the table before anyone approached me. I waited 45 minutes for my food. And the server couldn't even refill my drink like I asked. The food was tasty but not even close to worth it.

I came here a little early for lunch with my family and I do not regret it one bit! Their outdoor patio is beautiful, I can't imagine how alive it looks at night. We were seated immediately and our waitress was very attentive. We all ordered waters, as we usually do, but I was sort of disappointed to see that they do not have any nonalcoholic asian beverages, I was hoping they'd have a Thai iced tea or boba. We ordered edamame for an appetizer and it was pretty salty, which is how I like it but I understand that some people prefer minimal salt. Afterwards, I ordered a chicken katsu bento box which came almost immediately after the appetizer. The chicken was a little dry but the breading added a perfect crunch. Their rice was perfect and so were the dumplings. All in all, the place was beautiful and the food was great, despite my previous comments. My only regret was not ordering any of their sushi, but I'll definitely be back!

Being a foody from Asheville where the dining is superb, I know I'm hard to please. Thai and Asian dishes are among my favorites so the food has to be really good to get a high rating from me. Well, Bambu does not fall into the great dining category. I had read a few good reviews in Yelp so we decided to try it. We started with a Yelp recommended appetizer, the Duck Confit egg roll , and it was pretty tasty but the meal went downhill from there. I ordered the Thai Curry with chicken and shrimp. I was excited by the portion size but the taste was a let down. It was spicy, which I like, but there was no creativity in the flavor. Gary ordered beef with ginger, which was a decent size portion, but he couldn't taste any ginger and the beef was bland. if you're looking for a fun place to have a drink, sit outside and listen to music - there was a female guitarist who was enjoyable- you might want to go to Bambu but go elsewhere for your meal.

4 stars for atmosphere, 3 stars for cuisine, 2 stars for price. My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. The atmosphere was intimate and they do have some unique fusion dishes. The shrimp appetizer was really good, but the sushi left something to be desired. The prices are a little outrageous. It seems to be a trend in Charleston that you either get a great looking Japanese restaurant and not so great food or vice versa. This fits the bill of great looking- and the bill is high!

    (3)
  • Sarah S.

The Thai Curry was not Thai or Curry. It was a nice Japanese stir fry but no sauce & average for curry flavor, super small portion for the price (even in Charleston's standards). I won't get it again & not sure if I'll return to Bambu.

Extremely over priced. The quality of their food has really gone down hill. Greasy, cheap-looking pad thai shouldn't run $15.

This is the BEST sushi I've had in Charleston so far, hands down! If you want seriously excellent, fresh sushi, you have to try Bambu. They also have a great outdoor bar (with lots of heaters for the winter months) and often live music. The atmosphere is "chillax"... Great for date night or getting together with a group of friends who enjoys sushi. They have non-sushi items that are just as tasty, too! A little pricey but sometimes you really DO get what you pay for! Have been there multiple times with equally fantastic results. Needless to say, I will go back again and again and again.

This is a really good place to go with a group of friends. I am sure that it would be nice to go on a date or with your family but I think it is best suited for a group of friends. Went there with my wife and another couple. It is a fun atmosphere. We ate outside and even though it was a little hot there are a decent amount of fans to keep you cool. For an appetizer I had the lobster wontons and they were amazing. I would eat them everyday if I could. For dinner I had the flank steak special which was a cilantro lime marinade. It was very good. They messed the temperature up a little bit but fortunately the marinade was so good that it covered up the charred outer shell of the steak. I am sure that it was a mistake but even with the mistake it was still pretty good. I would eat it again. Everyone else I ate with had sushi and they loved it. My wife likes sushi and we would eat pretty good sushi up north and she considered it on par with it. What is great about Bambu is that it has a comprehensive menu so that everyone has something to enjoy. Bambu will get my business again and I will go back with friends. Go there and have a good night out.

Ok So I have been to this place three times in a row. I am here visiting out of town and am from California. This is as good as it gets here in Charleston area!! The Red and White Roll is AMAZING!! There Tempura Rolls are good too!! The Venue is nice and the Outside area is neat. I definitely Recommend this place.

Decor is nice. Food is expensive and the quantity is so little i barely had enough for a mouth full. Food quality wasn't even that great either...Please charleston save your money and do not go to this place. Worst place in down. Not to mention waiters chasing you down the parking of what tip they think they should have received. My waiter was Richard hopefully he'll be fired soon. Thanks for reading the very helpful review.

This is my first time trying out this place and I'm telling you, I'm not going back to this place ever again. The decor was nice, the food was mediocre, but most of all, the service was horrible. First of all, we ordered spring rolls for appetizers, and that didn't come out until after the main course. Not to mention, the sauce for pork belly was way too sweet, and the spring rolls contained chunks of duck. Clearly, either the chef did not have a slight idea that spring rolls are supposed to have shredded meat and vegetables, or that he was just lazy to prepare this dish. Despite all that, we all tipped 15% to the server. One of our friends tipped according to the service and quality, and everyone's entitled to that right, don't you think? As we were leaving the restaurant, the server chased us down from inside and asked us why we did not tip him accordingly. WOW, that was the most unprofessional thing I've ever encountered. Then he stated the amount of his meal out loud, embarrassed my friend in front of 4 other people. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE! If we didn't receive the right service and quality, why should we tip the right amount????? I almost wanted to grab my bill and take my tips back!!!! All I could say is (& I don't ever say this a lot): WHAT THE FUCK?!? Well this is not all. We then went back to talk to the manager or the owner. We wanted to fill out a review slip but they got none. So we asked for the manager and he came out. Didn't spend even one minute with us! he listened to the problem, kept cutting us by saying "yea I understand, I apologize" then slipped off right away as if he had some busy business to take care off (Let me tell you it was 10 o'clock at night, there were 3 ppl at the bar --got taken care of by the bartender, and one table getting ready to leave. Really? What was he busy tending to?). HORRIBLE SERVICE, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THIS RESTAURANT.

Oh my goodness--what great and fresh sushi! We stopped in for lunch and could not have been happier with our meal. Not only is the food great, but the outdoor seating area is one of the coolest things I've seen, and the waitstaff was great. I sometimes feel like you don't get your money's worth at Sushi restaurants, but this was right on target. Can't wait to go back!

We love Bambu! My girlfriend and I are the weirdo's who always show up right when they open because we have nothing else to do but crave sushi all day. I've had sushi all over Mt. Pleasant and parts of downtown, this is cleanest, most delicious I've found yet. I do think the portions could be a bit larger for the price but I love this place and the service i've been given there.

The only thing about this restaurant I can commend is its decor. The interior is stylish and modern with a slight asian flair. However, the food here is a big let down--it is simply bland and in some cases just downright bad. The menu is incredibly unfocused, ranging from hamburgers to sushi. Nothing is done well. I had an Ocean Isle Martini as a starter which promised to be "a medley of poached lobster, shrimp and scallops dressed in a spicy basil vinaigrette." What I got instead was a bunch of very chilled seafood chunks thrown in a martini glass without any seasoning what-so-ever. It had no taste. As an entree I had Mei Fun, which is a thin rice noodle dish. This dish also had nothing to recommend it. It was simply salty, with minimal vegetables and the worst cooked tofu I have probably ever consumed in a restaurant. The look of the dish was also repulsive....I have gotten better chinese food out of a foodtruck for half the price! All-in-all as a local charlestonian I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. Save your money! If you want sushi go to Oriental Garden, which is also on Coleman. If you want asian inspired tapas go downtown to Chai's and if you want good asian food go to Basil.

My wife and I came here at 7:30 on a Saturday night, were seated, and then abandoned. I would be a bit more understanding if the restaurant were packed but it was nearly empty. We weren't going to sit around and see how the rest of the dining experience played out (better safe than sorry). We walked out.

Good food, great venue and even better service! I went I'm on a Monday night so there were only about 4-5 occupied tables. There was cool indoor dining or relaxing outdoor dining with water ponds. I asked the waitress for a lightly sweet cocktail and she delivered. I had a miso soup, perfectly seasoned. My main course was the pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. The flavor was rich, heavy with tamarind flavor, perfect amount of spice. There was generous shrimp, seven. The chicken, although white meat, was wonderfully tender. They used thin rice noodle, pad Thai is usually with medium rice noodle. Also, they cut the noodle very short so the chopsticking experience felt different. I think the plate could have used some color, like green onion and or carrot shavings. Service was very attentive. Sometimes you sacrifice service by choosing to sit in patio of any restaurants because perhaps the waitress may not come by as often however here she visit regularly kept my water glass floor and always ask that I needed something. I would recommend this place.

I've been here dozens of times a while back and for some reason haven't been here in quite a while. Life..... Well last night I went there with friends and sat outside around their huge square marble table. I just love their outside decor. The lighting is dim and almost Christmas like. For some reason I just always feel at ease when I'm there as if I were in my own back yard relaxing with a glass of wine. The prices are reasonable and the sushi has never ever disappointed me. And since it's been a while for me, they had quite a few new rolls. I ordered them all, tasted them all, and loved them all. They also do a wonderful job with their flavored hot Saki. This place has always given me comfortable and enjoyable dining experience.

It was my first time there last night and was very impressed. We tried the 3 meals for $30 for restaurant week and were not disappointed. The truffle edameme was amazing and there was plenty of it. Next up was the Sunfire (spelling?) roll which was just spicy enough and presentation was perfect! The pad thai is good, and the fried rice dish was amazing. Both those dishes had plenty of chicken and shrimp - they did not skimp at all - that's great! It was not too busy at 10pm on Sat night, but the atmosphere is nice and awesome outside seating. Service was stella and very helpful in helping to decide on menu items. We will go back for sure.

Bambu has handsdown - the most beautiful outdoor seating. Indoor seating is nice as well, good ambiance and lighting. The wait staff is very attentive and fabulous at suggesting different rolls to accommodate what we were looking to try. The rolls we went with - were the Mt Pleasant roll and the Dinosaur roll. With a bottle of Saki. Very tasty rolls and the chef sent us a complimentary 3rd roll he made up. They are a bit pricey there, but I think you pay for the ambiance as well as the food. Great place to go every once in a while.

We stumbled upon this In the strip mall. Was a little skeptical. Let me tell you. It was the best sushi I've ever eaten! The prices are affordable. The service was great. Relaxing atmosphere. Offered a bar, booth, sushi bar, and patio area. Delicious! Will be back!

Went here for my birthday, it was awesome! They have a 2 entree and appetizer for $30 special that we enjoyed. We for the Pad Thai, it was good if you like it spicy if not, let them know. Duck spring rolls A+. Cool atmosphere, don't let the plaza fool you. Waiter took care of us and we will be returning!

This is definitely a scene. An expensive, interesting scene with a side of bro-tastic later in the evening. Our server, Rich, was so nice. Their bartenders? What?! I prefer very little cranberry in my cosmo so said "easy on the cranberry" - what did I get in return? Literally a martini glass. Of cranberry juice. I don't know if the bartender was annoyed that I asked to have my drink made a certain way, but it certainly seemed like a big Fuck You, to be honest. I was mortified to have to send it back, but I'm not drinking an $8 glass of cranberry juice. Rich looked honestly perplexed when I said it was just cranberry juice and even said, "I know I wrote "light cranberry!" All good, Rich, I ain't mad atcha. So, after that misstep, everything was a nice time. They don't (at least I don;t think) do regular rolls - like, yellowtail scallion/tuna avocado...they are very large, very intense, expensive rolls. Which are tasty, but whoa - you're dropping 11-14 on a roll. Granted it is eight pieces but sometimes you just need a simple roll. Their nigiri is also expensive, tasty, but expensive. We ordered a bottle of wine because I was in no mood to deal with the bartender again and Rich seemed very busy because it was packed (not a knock on him, we just drink a LOT of wine, and I didn't want to have to wait...because I need wine to breathe). Highlight of the night was not sushi - it was those duck confit spring rolls. WOW. SO SO GOOD. And for $8, that was the steal of the evening. Anywho, everything was well prepared, but this is not a casual night out - we dropped $118 before tip. So, it is what it is. We're new in town and need our weekly sushi place that has straightforward rolls and prices easier on the wallet, but for a night out, go for it. It is very, very noisy in there.

Happy hour is the best deal in town. $3 off all wines by the glass. $10 for 2 rolls (big, complicated rolls). The truffled edamame do not taste truffled. The coconut shrimp are good but the sweet shrimp with the sweet dipping sauce makes it dessert-like. Service is good. Other bar patrons are an interesting bunch. Looking forward to trying the ramen.

I was craving some Thai food and found this restaurant close to home. It had great reviews on Yelp, but sadly fell short of expectation. I ordered for carry-out a trio of spring rolls and the pad thai. When I took a bite of the vegetable spring roll, I was surprised (and not in a good way) that there were large chunks of crunchy vegetables (perhaps pickled). I guess I was expecting the smaller traditional spring roll with thin julienned vegetables. The duck spring roll was just that, shredded duck. It didn't seem to have any flavor aside from the dipping sauce. The third roll was a fresh (not fried) shrimp roll and that was good. I feel the need to mention that the spring rolls were quite large. Appetizers, in my opinion, should be small for two important reasons. It leaves you wanting more, and you're still hungry for your entree. Now on to the main course, the pad thai. Sadly, this dish falls extremely short of any other pad thais I've had. I really think Bambu tried to "jazz" it up, but you have to be very careful when you modify a tried and true dish. It was extremely dry. I had to use the left over dipping sauces from the spring rolls to get it down. The onions were a nice touch and added some texture, the whole peanuts, however, were not a nice touch. It had a smoky taste, but lacked the wonderful complexity in taste of a good pad thai. The servers do seem friendly and the outdoor area and decor are very nice. Such a shame that the food doesn't back up the ambiance. We will try again because we do want to support the local joints. Please no hate mail, I'm just being honest about my experience.

We recently decided to visit Bambu Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant. My choice in restaurants might have been a bit sketchy since I don't like many Thai and Japanese foods, and don't care for sushi (the restaurant's staples), but I decided to give it the college try!! When we arrived we were seated very quickly in a nice, large booth. The restaurant was not crowded and I overheard what I believe to be the manager at another table explaining that immediately following Restaurant Week there usually is a significant lull in business. This was very true the evening that we went. Be prepared to read your menu by the light of the candle as it's incredibly dark. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but can a sister get some lights on?? There are two components to the menu. They offer the usual suspects of soups/salads, small and large plates and sides. There is then an incredibly large sushi menu that is made from their full sushi bar at the hands of their master sushi chefs. If you like sushi, it seemed like the menu item to get! Recovering from recent major dental work this was the first time in days that I was a) hungry and b) thinking that I could eat something. Deciding to strike while the iron was hot we started with two small plates. The Lobster Wontons (similar to Crab Ragoon), were light, delicately fried and had a silky lobster filling. Equally as delightful was the sweet chili sauce that accompanied them. I thought that we were on to something... The Spare Ribs were steeped in Asian BBQ sauce, topped with sesame seeds and served with mango slaw. Although not something I would usually order, they were fall-off-the-bone tender and very good. If the slaw's advertised "mango" component seemed missing altogether and just tasted like shredded cabbage. No worries, we still thought we had made a good choice for dinner. Our dinners were served quickly, but we did not feel rushed. I was thrilled that the dishes were incredibly hot (one of my pet peeves is cold or tepid food hitting the table). For the first time in all of the times my husband has ordered Pad Thai very spicy, it was just that. There was plenty of shrimp and chicken in the dish and we had requested a hot sauce to accompany it. They call the sauce "Death Sauce" because of the heat and rightfully so. The Pad Thai was a winner even without the sauce. Alas, my dish was somewhat of a bust. In hindsight I was glad that the restaurant was so dark. When I look at the pictures of my Fried Rice it looks as mushy as it tasted. I don't know how they managed, but the rice was very mushy and didn't really even taste like rice. Although there was also ample shrimp and chicken in the Fried Rice it was incredibly bland and very disappointing. Oh well, we tried. I would also add that our service was spotty at best. Drinks were forgotten or never brought to the table; it took a long time to clear plates, etc. She just seemed missing in action. And what's with bringing Styrofoam "to go" containers to the customer to have them pack their own "take home" meal?? Where's the "service" in that? Since this seems like a Charleston practice, I wasn't that surprised, but our server had already removed our silverware and we had to try to get our meals off of our plates and into the box with a straw. A Straw? I can't even use chopsticks let alone trying to maneuver getting food off of my plate with a straw. Not a great experience overall.
